The effectiveness of the measurement portfolio of a company either in terms of timeliness, historical depth or quality could be greatly enhanced by assembling a consolidated base of information commonly referred to as a Data Warehouse.
However, simply storing terabytes of data does not necessarily contribute to this end. One essential function of a data warehouse is to integrate and prepare data which enables analytical systems: Analytics to benefit business users based on information gathered according to business requirements.
The DW should provide simplified methods to review performance and financial measures at operational and strategic levels. Unless this goal is achieved there is no sense in storing monstrous volumes of data just for the sake of obtaining a badge for the biggest data warehouse!
